Biodiesel for newbies.

Things I learned the first 4 years of brewing.

  • Start small. My first processor made 6 liters of biodiesel. I made most of my mistakes on small batches. It's cheaper that way.
  • Once you have mastered brewing, go with a bigger processor. One big batch is better than a bunch of little batches.
  • Do not make biodiesel in your house.
  • Browse the infopop site and join a listserv or three.
  • Biodiesel is attracted to newer clothes. Old clothes that are covered in paint and grease repel biodiesel.
  • Buy a bag of OilDri, better yet, buy two bags.
  • Wear the goofy rubber gloves and eye protection when mixing methoxide.
  • Have good ventilation.
  • Time is your friend. The longer your WVO settles, the better. Unwashed biodiesel also benefits from settling. Heat is also helpful.
  • Pump WVO from the top down.
  • Do not pour any milky-looking oil into your processor. When brewing, water is not your friend.
